Q3

Explain how the political context in which newspapers are produced, influences their ownership and regulation. Refer to The Guardian and The Daily Mail newspapers you have studied to support your answer. [10 marks] The press in the UK is free and it is generally accepted that this is fundamental to a democratic society. That means that newsmakers should seek out and circulate news, information, ideas, comment and opinion to hold those in authority to account. The press provides the platform for a multiplicity of voices to be heard. This also means that newspapers are allowed to express opinions, as well as political views. In both newspapers' cases, as any press out there, they have a political bias, which of course affects the news they put out as well as their stand on social and ethical issues. After the 2011 phone hacking scandals involving a range of newspapers a major report was published, by Lord Leveson. As a result, a new press regulator, IPSO, was set up. The aim w...

Burn the Witch Essay

How are media language and intertextuality used in “Burn the Witch” to construct representations of groups, messages and values? Burn the Witch is a song written by the English rock band Radiohead, and the music video is created via stop-motion animation, which pays homage to the British series Trumptonshire and the Wicker Man. The music video gets released the same month as Brexit was announced in June 2016. It seems to be critiquing some of the propaganda put out from the Brexit supporters, while Europe was in the middle of a migrant crisis the moral panic created by the Brexit supporters continuously fueled the hatred towards the minorities. In an article the producer claims that the music video and the song are both an answer to the Brexit deal and increasing hate towards minority groups from the Middle East.   As mentioned earlier the music video pays homage to the series Trumptonshire, which could be a reference to the notorious president of the United Stat...

Concept Music Video Analysis

I will be analysing the music video for the song Somebody I Used To Know by the Australian songwriter and artist Gotye and the New Zealand singer Kimbra. The video was produced by the Australian artists and cinematographers Natasha Pincus and Warwick Field. Concept music videos are characterised by them being based on an idea or a concept. They combine all the characteristic of the song. They can sometimes be very confusing, rand and usually don't have a story. They are quite unpredictable and could fall under the large umbrella of the movement post-modernism. This specific video could also be labelled as a performance one as well, because of the amount of singing there is. The video features the two artists Gotye and Kimbra naked in the video, and as they sing their bodies are gradually painted into the backdrop through stop motion animation, a technique used in animation to bring static objects to life on screen. This is done by moving the object in increments while filming a ...

On their website they claim, that they campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to them for help. All Shelter ads follow a certain theme and are quite similar to each other in terms of composition, shot types, fonts and ideologies communicated. Every ad contains a close up shot of what appears to be a middle-aged person from an unknown ethnic background(could be British white, Middle-eastern,etc.). The use of the close up shots is supposed to emphasize the facial expression, and in this case the facial expression of the models is sad, desperate and hopeless, which is generally how homeless people feel when they've got nothing left and are living on ...

Lucozade Ad Analysis

Lucozade is a soft drink company founded in 1927,originally named Glucozade by Thomas Beecham and was mainly used for medical purposes. Nowadays Lucozade produces energy and sport drinks for athletes. Lucozade is a major sponsor of events, teams and very popular and generally liked athletes in the UK and Ireland. Many of these athletes are featured in their ads and website for branding purposes such as the heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua. An example of such an ad is this one where we have got a mid-close up (MCU) shot of Gareth Bale, who is a football player for Real Madrid and an ex player for Tottenham Hotspur. He could be considered an influential athlete and a role model due to his ''clean reputation'' (some football players have got backgrounds full of law cases and are not very liked by the general population) and also due to him being the ex-leader of Totteneham Hotspur. The masthead ''In a Different League'' is a reference to Gareth...
