An essay about a story and the news values applied to it

Which news values apply in the story? Give a range of examples and make specific reference to theory including Galtung and Ruge and narrative ( Levi-Strauss). Consider the role of ideology.

This essay will be evaluating the news values used in the following article. Galtung and Ruge argued that the news values are a set of unspoken rules which are abode by the journalists writing stories. I will be looking at the FIGHTING FOR FIT article of The Sun.

Firstly, one thing that really stood out for me in this particular article is how irrelevant the story is. A bit overweight mother goes to the park with her child to have a workout. It’s just a casual thing to do, at least for an average person. But it’s not your “average person” here ,that here is a celebrity, Chanelle Hayes a singer, model, but best known for her appearance in the Big Brother show (2007). Clearly there is threshold used in this story. Threshold is the size of an event that is needed for it to be considered “news worthy”. Commonly occurring events happening to individuals would not count, unless they involve a celebrity as in here.

Secondly, we can see how the story is narrated with protagonist Chanelle being depicted as a loving mother (with sentences as “As she got out her car she made sure little Frankie was kept snuggled up , “Chanelle couldn't help but laugh and giggle as she played with her youngest son at the table” etc.), whereas her couple Ryan, is called “evil” and depicted as an antagonist for “walking away” from her and her kids. That means the next used news value would be continuity and narrative. Additionally the writer tries to make us feel sympathetic for Chanelle using adjective and statements such as “She was looking sad” and “Heartbroken”.

A final thing I’d like to add is how this article is a bit part of a composition. Composition is a way of balancing out the content released in the particular journal. For instance a spree of dull political stories wouldn’t either look good on the paper nor would it attract a lot of audience. I personally find these kind of stories boring but necessary, due to the fact that interesting events and big stories do not happen that often, so by adding these types of I would call “filler” articles which are easy to read and reach a bigger range of audience, newspapers have a range of stories readers can pick from.

In conclusion the applied news values in the story were threshold, continuity/narrative and composition. The article by itself is a filler article providing no relevant information, but it can be argued that articles such as these are needed to balance out the news which are being covered.
