*Analysis of the previous poster:

The main focus of the poster is the child in the centre. It is looking directly at the audience and it gives out feelings of hostility due to its facial expression. Its hand is reaching forwards and the palm is facing down so it also asserts some level of dominance and power. The story must be set during the 20th century based of the sheriff's uniform. The sky full of stars and the mysterious figure in the bottom right corner may be referring to the genre of the show which is sci-fi.

*3 1980s films that the show referenced:

1.
Stranger Things pays homage to the film Alien (1979). This specific scene is from when the scientists were exploring the Upside Down. Also the monster (a.k.a. the Demogorgon) looks a lot like the alien from Alien (1979). It's a mysterious predator that abducts people and devours them. It looks horrific and scary.

2.
Stranger things pays homage to the film The Shining (1980). In this scene Joyce Byers just spoke to her son  through a gate to the Upside Down. After the gate clsoed she tried to reach her son by opening the get in the wall with an axe which refers to Jack breaking into the door of the bathroom with an axe trying to get to Wendy (The Shining 1980).

3.
Stranger Things pays homage to the film A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). In the scene, the demogorgon was trying to break in the house of Joyce Byers the same way Freddy Krueger was haunting the woman in the other scene. Throughout the series, we constantly see reoccurring scenes of the Upside Down. For instance, Will Byers often has Flash Bakcs of the Upside Down where he is alone haunted by fear, the same way people are by Freddy in their dreams.
